Swans and Geese are nesting at Wichelstowe

We are delighted that families of water birds are making the new water features that have been created at Wichelstowe home

In particular we have been keeping an eye on the swans nesting in Kingfisher Lake who have picked a good spot on the island. One of the benefits of the boardwalk is that it creates a good separation between people and dogs and the pond area allowing wildlife to flourish.

Over in Wichel Fields a family of geese have decided to set up their nest on the towpath. Unfortunately, this is in an area where we are due to be surfacing the towpath this Spring, but the programme has been adjusted a little and fences have been set up to ensure that workmen keep away from the area directly next to the nest. The male goose has been keeping a close watch on the workmen connecting up the towpath lights.

We have found that the new families tend to gravitate to the work areas where it is generally a bit quieter with less passersby. Or maybe it is due to them being adopted by the site teams who ensure they are well fed!

We’re looking forward to seeing how many baby birds arrive and hopefully the swans will stay in safe areas and not wander onto the roads this year.

A fangtastic new home for Wichelstowe’s bat population has been unveiled – a specially designed bat cave that forms part of a wider conservation effort in the area.

Now, the bats have a brand new, purpose-built replacement designed to recreate their lost habitat.

Two new litter pick stations have been installed at Wichelstowe, making it easier than ever for local residents to help keep the community looking its best.

The stations, located by the pond to the north of West Wichel and near the lakes in East Wichel, will provide easy access to litter picking equipment for anyone keen to get involved in maintaining the area’s green spaces and surroundings
