Boardwalk

The boardwalk runs through the green spine which separates the Middle and West Wichel areas. One of the key features running south to north through this area is the Elcombe Brook and the green space includes the Brooks floodplain. As a lower lying area of the site the ground can be quite muddy and a boardwalk has therefore been built to ensure that the path is usable all year round.

The first section of boardwalk is around 500m long and 3m wide. The route which opened in July 2025 also includes two new bridges over the Elcombe Brook.

Solar powered lights have been included to help mark out the route at night. The lights selected have been designed to reduce upward light spillage by 98% minimising the negative effects of light pollution on bats and other nocturnal animals.

The boardwalk is made of a mixture of wooden elements and recycled plastics which are harder wearing and more appropriate for sections which come into contact with the ground.

The boadwalk was built by Keystone Environmental who have compiled some drone footage of both the build process and the final product.
