Works are underway to extend the canal into Wichel Fields. Keep an eye out for the new section of towpath to open and find out more about the wildlife who move into their new home.
In late 2024 the works were paused temporarily before restarting in Spring 2025. At that point, work will focus on completing the remaining lining, surfacing the towpath and installing the landscaping, with plants that are currently being nurtured in a nursery. Work will then continue over the next few years to extend the canal west by 500m to join up the East Wichel section of canal with the District Centre. This phase will involve complex engineering work, including passing beneath a new road and the existing Mill Lane, along with the installation of a pedestrian canal crossing.
