Swales

Running down the eastern edge of the Orchards development the swale is a crucial part of Wichelstowe’s surface water drainage system. The swale will carry rainwater from the development north into the northern pond before water is released back into the river network. This system has two main benefits, firstly it holds back the flow of water so in times of heavy rain it doesn’t all rush into the rivers causing flooding further upstream. Secondly, surface water features such as swales help improve water quality and are a good complement to traditional pipes networks.

The swale is 400m meters long and will connect into two further ponds at the southern end.

Three bridges are planned over the swale connecting the housing area to the green space and footpaths beyond.

Whilst the ponds are designed to hold standing water all year round the swales will be dry for sections of the year. They are planted with wildflowers, which will ensure they are attractive features.
