Water Vole
and the
Waders

The heart of the District Centre is home to artist Lucy Casson’s work, Water Vole and the Waders. A nationwide advert inviting artists to design artwork for this area generated over 100 responses and some fantastic proposals.

The successful artist, Lucy Casson impressed the team with her portfolio of work and her proposal for a number of bronze statues which are bursting with character. Lucy said ‘For the commission at Wichelstowe I wanted to create a little narrative with the birds and animals by the river and canal. I was inspired and enchanted by the moorhens I encountered on the water side path and by the stories I was told of the illusive resident water voles’.

  • Lucy Casson’s other sculptures include ‘fantastical  beings, birds and  animals’ at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, horse benches in Hebden Bridge and foxes and cherries above Brixton market.
  • Each of the sculptures was created in clay before moulds were made to handover to the foundry to create the bronze statues. The clay models allowed Lucy to get the poses and the expressions just right.
  • Unfortunately vandalism has resulted in the first three ducklings leaving home. Maybe in future there will be more ducklings….
