Wichelstowe Orchard

The Wichelstowe Orchard was planted in 2024 and includes around 140 different fruit trees. In addition new hedgerow which runs alongside the grass path includes species with fruits and flowers like raspberry, elder, crab apple, hops and dog rose which are good for wildlife and contribute to the orchard character. It is hoped that future generations of Wichelstowe residents will be able to collect and make use of the apples, pears, plums and other fruits.

The historic Wiltshire apple varieties include the Wiltshire Monster raised by Mr William Turner in his cottage at Worton near Devizes around 1900 and Bedwyn Beauty raised by Mr Stone of Great Bedwym in around 1890.

The Orchard surrounds the future site of allotments which will contribute to making this the most productive area of the site.

The mound of earth to the north of the site provides habitat for reptiles such as grass snakes which are found alongside the railway line and like to bask in the sun.
